Asciilands Building Guide: Houses, Pieces & Costs
Updated
⟳ Synced from the official game files at (build c7ba7029d359)
Houses in Asciilands snap together from modular pieces: a foundation, floors, wall panels, doorways, stairs and roofs, in wood or stone. Below are the rules, every piece's cost, and what keeps a build from falling apart.
Build your first shelter
- Open Build with B, choose a piece, point at the ground and Left click to place it.
- Start with a foundation on dry, level ground. A foundation is a level 6 m platform; you can extend it downhill.
- Add walls, a doorway (and a door) and a roof. A green preview means the spot works; a red one tells you why it is blocked.
- R rotates floors, roofs and stairs; walls turn to fit the edge they snap to. Hold Right mouse and drag to move the camera. Esc finishes.
You need a wooden hammer (workbench: stick, 2 planks, rope) to repair or upgrade pieces, not to place them.
Every house piece and its cost
| Piece | Wood version | Stone version | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation | 4× Plank + 2× Stone Chunk | 10× Cut Stone | Start a level 6m platform on dry ground. Extend downhill or into shallow water where its supports reach the bed. |
| Floor | 2× Plank | 8× Cut Stone + 2× Plank | Attach to a wall, stair landing or neighbouring floor. Wood spans one cell and stone spans two. |
| Wall | 2× Plank | 8× Cut Stone | A full-height panel that snaps to a floor edge and supports the next storey. |
| Window Wall | 2× Plank | 7× Cut Stone | A wall panel with an open window, supporting a roof or upper floor. |
| Doorway | 2× Plank | 7× Cut Stone | A full-height frame with a walk-through opening for a separate hinged door. |
| Door | 2× Plank + 1× Rope | 3× Plank + 1× Iron Ingot | A hinged door fitted to a doorway. Open or close it with F, Alt-click, or the build catalog. |
| Stairs | 4× Plank + 2× Stick | 10× Cut Stone | Climb one storey. Build the next floor at its top landing. |
| Roof | 3× Plank + 2× Fiber | 8× Cut Stone + 2× Plank | A sloped roof section. Rotate adjacent sections to shape your roofline. |
| Flat Roof | 3× Plank + 1× Stick | 8× Cut Stone + 2× Plank | A level roof for wide houses. Sits on a wall or post top, or extends from a grounded flat roof. Railings on its edges make a terrace. |
| Gable | 2× Plank | 4× Cut Stone | Closes the open side of a sloped roof. |
| Post | 2× Wood Log + 1× Plank | 5× Cut Stone | A full-height central porch post supporting a roof or upper floor. Leave space to walk around it. |
| Railing | 2× Plank + 1× Stick | 4× Cut Stone | A low barrier for a porch or landing edge. Does not support an upper storey. |
Storeys, stairs and supports
- Stairs climb one storey. Build the next floor at the top landing of the stairs.
- Walls, window walls and posts support roofs and upper floors; railings do not.
- A third and fourth storey need stone supports. The game's help describes houses up to four storeys.
- Removing or breaking a support can collapse the walls and floors resting on it. Take buildings apart from the top down.
Repairs, upgrades and taking things down
- Maintain (in Build) repairs a worn piece. Bring a wooden hammer and the materials shown.
- Upgrade to stone turns a wooden piece into stone with a wooden hammer and stone materials.
- Disassemble (or X while building) removes your own pieces and refunds half the materials, rounded down. Empty chests and furnishings off a support first.
Decay and damage
- Buildings outside towns start to decay after one day. Keep them up with Maintain, or build on claimed town land instead.
- Axes damage wood; pickaxes damage stone and metal. Town buildings are much tougher, and Town Halls cannot be destroyed.
- A destroyed piece leaves a quarter of its materials (rounded down). A destroyed chest spills its contents.
- Doors open only for their owner, plus, on town land, townmates who can build there. Chests and stations are public to anyone in reach, so keep them indoors behind a closed door. Watch the open windows.
Region building limit
Each region holds 4,096 placed pieces across all players, counting stations, chests and doors. Build shows the current Region Cap count. At the limit, new pieces are refused (and cost nothing); you can still edit or remove pieces.
Other things you can place
