Asciilands Companions: Taming & Talents
Updated
⟳ Synced from the official game files at (build c7ba7029d359)
Six kinds of wild animal can become your companion. Each likes one food, has a talent, and from bond level 4 carries a saddlebag for you.
How to tame a companion
- Carry the animal's favourite food (table below).
- Approach gently and press F to offer it. Three accepted offers make a companion.
- With a species you haven't tamed before, wait five seconds between offers.
- Wolf pup: give it time to finish each mouthful.
- Boar: approach while it is calm. A hurt boar needs time to recover first.
- Heron: stand still holding fish and let it come to you; moving makes it cautious again. It first needs three seconds of stillness.
- A new friend replaces your current companion, so empty the old one's saddlebag and finish any Fetch trip first.
The Journal has an early goal for this, "A wild friend": pick berries from a berry bush (a few grow near every starting clearing) and offer them to a fox, fennec or red panda.
Species, food, talents and saddlebags
| Animal | Favourite food | Talent | Saddlebag (bond 4+) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fox | Berries | Sniffs farther, and is twice as likely to find bonus food when you gather ordinary trees or plants. | 4 item types, 30 kg |
| Fennec | Berries | Warns you about scorpions from farther away. | 3 item types, 15 kg |
| Red panda | Berries | Sniffs out fruit or honey in trees and helps you find it while gathering. | 4 item types, 30 kg |
| Wolf pup | Raw meat | At bond level 5, hits twice as hard as other companions when helping against hostile wildlife. | 5 item types, 45 kg |
| Boar | Apples | The biggest saddlebag. | 8 item types, 90 kg |
| Heron | Lake fish | At bond level 2 it can Scout instead of Sniff out, revealing one more ring of terrain in the atlas. | 2 item types, 10 kg |
Talents work while the companion is nearby and following you. The boar's row says "biggest saddlebag" because the game lists no separate talent for it in its help.
Care and bonding
- Feeding its favourite food restores hunger and mood. A happy, fed companion uses its abilities sooner.
- Press Y to pet it; that lifts its mood once a minute.
- Companions never starve or die. A badly hurt one limps home, rests for two minutes and comes back with its items.
- Items already in a saddlebag stay even if it is over the limit; take some out before adding more.
- Open the Companion menu with L.
Wolves and boars fight back when you hunt them, and deer flee; defeated animals give meat and hides that you can work at a workbench (animal part recipes).
